Where the Wild Beers Are: The Porter Beer Bar

By Elisha Neubauer

The nation has fallen in love with craft beer - and Atlanta is no exception. With a fantastic underground music scene, trendy pubs and bars popping up, and an expanding collegiate population - it is no surprise that the craft beer trend has made a comfortable home in the area.

Leading the way in the Little Five Points locale is The Porter Beer Bar. "My husband and I always loved beer and we only live a few blocks away from Little Five Points," says Molly Gunn, co-owner of The Porter Beer Bar. "So when we found the space we knew a beer bar was just the thing Little Five Points needed." Gunn describes the space as love at first sight, claiming that she and her husband knew it was the perfect location the moment they spotted it. And perfect it is - the exposed brick wall and wooden booths make a stunning backdrop for beer and pub grub.

Belgian Fries, Pull-Apart Pretzels with Pub Cheese, and Georgia Wild Shrimp n' Grits are simultaneously familiar and gourmet. Rotating specials also add to the authenticity of the menu and include such treats as Painted Hills Steak Tartare and Florida Corn Agnolotti. But if you've stepped into The Porter Beer Bar, you're probably looking for pair your food with something sudsy.

Gunn and her husband are avid beer lovers, which has translated into an expansive craft beer menu for patrons of their establishment. The Porter Beer Bar carries 50 beers on draft (including two hand pumps) and over 800 bottled beers available. In addition to their wide array of beer selections, The Porter Beer Bar participates in several beer-related events. "We do tap takeovers frequently, either with one brewery or a theme," Gunn tells us. "In January, every Friday is Where the Wild Beers Are! And we tap wild and sour beers." The bar also hosts beer dinners, classes, and beer and cheese pairings on-site as well.

More than just the local watering hole, The Porter Beer Bar also has an efficient Community Outreach program. The Gunns partner with such organizations as Georgia Organics, Dad's Garage Theatre Company, and the Southern Foodways Alliance, and are Silver-Level donors to Mary-Lin Elementary.

Whether you're looking for your next Friday night chill-spot, a casual dining option, or just a new experience in Atlanta, The Porter Beer Bar is a great place to add to your repertoire. "Atlanta is a great and growing market for craft beer," says Gunn. "I love that so many of our guests are willing to trying something new, and there is always some new beer to try at The Porter!"
