What to Look Out for in a Home Insurance: An Interview with Bambi Hackney of Equity Insurance Solutions

By Bambi Hackney

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

I have been an independent insurance agent in the state of Georgia since 2002. Working as an independent agent, writing policies for many different companies gives the ability to really see the trends in insurance to better serve our customers overall needs. Equity Insurance Solutions is an agency that has many companies and a wide range of carriers to cover lots of insurance needs.

What do I need to have in hand (documents, facts, bills, etc.) before I look for an insurance provider?

Previous insurance policy if applicable, any claims in the last 5 years, address, year home is built, is it frame or brick, square footage, basement/crawlspace/slab, when was the roof replaced, gas or electric heat, when was (electrical, plumbing, and heat) replaced or updated, number of fireplaces, and names and date of births of all named insureds, and to get the best rate auto policy information to get a multi-policy quote.

Will the location of my home affect my insurance costs?

Yes, rate is based on risk. If the risk is higher the rate is higher. If you live in a zip code that is prone to tornado's, it is likely the zip code has had more homeowners claims. If the amount of claims go up in a zip code over a period of time the rate will be adjusted to cover the increase of claims.

What does it mean to make sure I insure my home to "replacement value"?

Replacement value is the cost to replace the home if there was a total loss. It includes materials, labor, and debris removal as well. At this time due to the housing market replacement cost is higher than the market value of the home.

Can I save money on my monthly premium if I add certain safety features to my home?

An alarm system will give you a discount. Some companies will give a discount for a Greenstar energy-efficient home. Deadbolts, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers also provide additional safety features to your home.

How can I ensure that I am working with a reliable home insurance provider?

To make sure you are dealing with a reputable company, I recommend doing some research online about the company you have received the quote through. It is best to research how the company has handled claims specific to your state. Also, check to see how the company is rated with AM Best.

What's the best way for people to get in contact with you and your company?
