Two Brothers Have Made Osteria Mattone An Authentic Italian Restaurant

By Kelly Church

Inspired by a traditional osteria, an Italian venue that serves wine and simple food, Osteria Mattone is a Roswell, GA restaurant. Owner and sommelier Daniel Pernice opened Osteria Mattone with his brother, after committing to years of researching authentic Italian fare. The goal was to bring something to the Roswell area that had a genuine feel.

"Osteria Mattone was the result of years and years of visiting Italian restaurants around the world, particularly in New York and Italy," Pernice said. "Before opening, Ryan spent 10 days in Rome eating at several restaurants a day. I went to the Piedmont region and toured vineyards around Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero."

The menu at Osteria Mattone is vast. With appetizers, salads, pizza, Italian meats and cheese, seafood, pasta and more, the restaurant has their bases covered. For Pernice, his favorite dish is the tonnarelli cacio e pepe. He described it as a "true Roman classic pasta." It's simple, topped with pecorino cheese and cracked black pepper. The noodles are homemade.

On the menu, guests will find authentic Italian meats and cheeses. The restaurant highlights aged prosciutto, smoked prosciutto, pork neck and sweet pork sausage. For cheeses, guests can enjoy taleggio, gorgonzola, parmigiano-reggiano and la tur, which gives them an assortment of soft and hard cheeses.

"I want them to imagine themselves eating and drinking the sort of things they would fine at any restaurant in Rome, Italy, but with the added familiarity and convenience of a neighborhood restaurant located right down the street," Pernice said.

On the wine menu, guests can find red and white wines from all over Italy, and some select wines from other regions, including Argentina, Australia and the United States. As a sommelier, Pernice thought it was especially important to list wines in an organized way so guests can easily find what they're looking for.
