The Place of Forsyth County Offers Community Help to Those in Need

By Courtney Clark

In Cumming, a local organization has been helping those in Forsyth County with emergency basic needs for over four decades. The Place of Forsyth County provides financial assistance, clothing, food, and more to those who are in desperate need of such care.

The Place was founded in 1975. Four Dominican Nuns saw a need for a nonprofit Social Service Organization to help resident families during challenging times. Now, the Place still sees a need and uses volunteers to help the Cumming community.

For eight years now, the nonprofit has also been serving others through Focus on Forsyth. According to Executive Director Joni Smith, this is a service "which helps needy households through referrals from schools and senior centers." Senior service providers and school social workers refer those in need to Focus on Forsyth. The program helps with such care as providing beds for children, bringing wheelchair ramps to seniors, and helping the elderly with yard work.

Those in emergency financial situations can also find relief at the Place. In the past, the organization has helped with rent, utilities, medical expenses, transportation costs, and more. The Workforce Development program, according to the website, is another way to help the Forsyth County community by assisting "under-employed and unemployed residents with job search assistance, work readiness training, and career and life coaching." This type of help includes providing job leads, resume preparation, access to computers, interview skill training, and much more.

The Place would not be as helpful without the assistance and generosity of volunteers and donors. Smith explains that volunteers are asked to provide at least three hours of their time and be at least sixteen years of age. Volunteers can help in the food pantry and garden, as work force instructors, and in our thrift store to name only a few. Donors can help monetarily or by donating items to the thrift store.

The Place Thrift Store is an easy way for Cumming residents to help their neighbors. As the website explains, "Shoppers are making a difference. All funds generated from the Thrift Store support agency operations." Shoppers can find clothing and other items that will give them a "unique second-hand boutique atmosphere."

Regardless of how Forsyth County residents help, each contribution is appreciated. The Place of Forsyth has provided vital care to families in need and to people of all ages, from helping with finances to giving necessary items and service assistance. And those who want to volunteer will find a good cause here. As Smith says, "See how you can make a difference in the life of your Forsyth County neighbor."
