The Patio Cafe and Bakery: Come For The Cakes, Stay For The Sandwiches And Soups

By S. Mathur

Whether you want a fire truck birthday cake for a four year old or a bacon sandwich while waiting for the wife to finish her shopping, the Patio Cafe and Bakery can meet your needs. The bakery in Duluth, GA has been open for nearly 15 years.

"When we were tossing around ideas for opening a restaurant, we wanted a place where people could go for fresh, homemade food," owner Julie Medina said. "We wanted to create an atmosphere that made people feel comfortable and like they were at home."

It's a come for the cakes and cookies and stay for the soups and wraps kinds of place. In fact, Medina's favorite menu items are the delicious soups.

"My favorite is the poblano chicken chowder," she said. "It is rare to find a quick service restaurant that makes their soups completely from scratch. We make them fresh every morning and when they run out, we start all over and make more."

The wraps and sandwiches are popular too, and for many people, they are the primary reason for a visit. The cafe menu includes salads, with the Cobb salad highly recommended. Sandwiches include the regular varieties and specialties like grilled pimento and bacon, hot ham and Swiss and the California special with roasted turkey, Provolone cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and a creamy mustard dressing served on open faced marbled rye, along with a fruit cup. Staff are very helpful and will customize sandwiches according to individual tastes.

The cookies and cakes are made with the freshest ingredients and can be customized for any event. The expert cake and cookie decorator has as much fun making them as people will have eating them. Cakes covered in icing roses, cookies shaped like foxes or owls and the cupcakes are almost too beautiful too eat. Almost.

"During any holiday season, especially Halloween and Christmas, there is a sense of excitement in The Patio," Medina said. "During the summer months, it can be quite the opposite. You will always find friends meeting for longer lunches and enjoying a more relaxed time of year."

The sense of community at The Patio is strong, and at times it can feel like family.

With The Patio's catering service, you can bring the party home. The catering menu features most items from the cafe as well as fruit trays and delicious hot casseroles.
