The Center for Yoga Brings Likeminded Individuals Together to Practice Yoga

By Kelly Church

The Center For Yoga humbly started in Othene Munson's living room before blossoming into a full-service yoga studio in Woodstock, GA and expanding into Midtown Atlanta. Munson's goal was to establish a community of likeminded people to share personal growth and well-being in a safe environment.

"I was in search of kindred spirits on the path of yoga, health, and happiness as well as sharing in the great teachings I had learned from many teachers around the world. Woodstock was ready for just this type thing and The Center For Yoga was created," Munson said.

The Center for Yoga is now 21 years old and offers classes for all levels of yoga experience, ability, and age. Taught by Munson herself and other highly certified yoga instructors, the studio offers daily classes for adults and children, as well as teacher trainings and workshops for those who wish to deepen their practice. Also offered are free meditation sessions, addiction recovery meetings, and cancer support classes.

"Our classes have an emphasis on alignment and form, and are delivered in a compassionate and caring way, with the use of yoga props to assist in making the poses comfortable and achievable," Munson said. "This atmosphere attracts those who wish to develop a yoga practice that is safe and healing, as well as make new friends, and have some fun."

Munson is an ardent believer in the healing powers of yoga. Regular practice can lead to improved physical and emotional wellness, with some people experiencing weight loss, improved strength and enhanced mental focus.

"Children have a lot of stress from school and after-school activities," Munson said. "Yoga gives them a strategy for quiet time, test preparation, peer pressure, hurt feelings, anger issues and helps them to focus by linking brain to body."

No matter what age, experience level or favorite style of yoga a student has when coming to The Center for Yoga, Munson hopes the studio can help encourage proper form to improve a student's overall practice.

Located in the Towne Lake area of Woodstock, a drop-in class is $17. Students can also purchase discounted classes by signing up for the 8-week sessions.
