Sweetie Pie by Savie Bakes the Sweet Taste of Thailand in Georgia Wedding Cakes

By Kelly Church

Originally a home-based bakery in Bangkok, Thailand, Sweetie Pie by Savie is now an Athens, GA recently, offering sweet treats inspired by Asian spices. Owner and baker Savie Rochanasmita Arnold's wedding cakes have been featured in several magazines, including The Classic Wedding Magazine and The Southern Distinction Magazine. For Arnold, she believes her wedding cakes makes her business unique.

"Our wedding cakes are one part of our business that makes us stand out, not only because we can make each cake as pretty and unique as the customers want, but I think the flavors that we offer make us stand out from other businesses around here," Arnold said.

Sweetie Pie by Savie creates a twist on red velvet with their Taro purple velvet cake. Taro is a root that is commonly used in Asian cultures. Its flavor resembles that of vanilla and taro is a key ingredient in both the cake and the cream cheese frosting. Although, Arnold said Sweetie Pie by Savie cakes are much less sweet than the typical wedding cake.

"All of our products, including our wedding cakes, have just the right amount of sweetness," Arnold said. "Nothing is so sweet that it makes your teeth hurt."

Arnold's favorite cake on the menu is the Thai dream cake, which she said reminds her of Bangkok. It blends pandan leaf, coconut milk, toasted coconut and more for an ode to Thailand. Other unique dessert flavors include the green tea tiramisu cake, turmeric ginger snap cookies, teriyaki cookies, and peanut butter and shallot cookies that feature fried shallots baked in the cookie.

"I have a Ph.D. in science education," Arnold said. "I use my science background to help understand the chemistry behind the baking process, to understand why we have to put each ingredient into our baking products. This helps me develop new recipes for our bakery."

When it comes to creating a new recipe, Arnold leans heavily on her mother, who visits from Thailand every six months. She taste tests new bakery creations and doesn't hesitate to give Arnold feedback.

"She still inspires me constantly," Arnold said.
