Star Provisions Market And Cafe Is A Bakery, Deli, Farmstand, Gourmet Pantry and More

By S. Mathur

One of the best places to go for a sandwich, or cheese, wine, high quality meats and seafood, unique cookware, and gourmet foods in Atlanta is the Star Provisions Market and Cafe. It is a bakery, deli, local farm stand and gourmet cheese market all in one. Star Provisions functions as a pantry and walk in cooler for gourmet cooks, and offers locally roasted coffee and sweets as well.

Owner Anne Quatrano, known as the queen of Atlanta fine dining, also owns other landmark establishments like Baccahanlia, the Floataway Cafe and W.H. Stiles Fish Camp.

"Initially we opened Star Provisions in 1999 to offer the home cook an option for purchasing fine artisanal cheese, house made charcuterie, fresh baked bread and pastries, etc." she said. "We quickly realized that our guests also wanted to eat something while in our shop, so, we added coffee, sandwiches, prepared food and seating."

Guests are glad they added the sandwiches, which are available every day from 11 am to 5 pm. The most popular sandwiches are the prosciutto, Reuben, and shrimp po' boy. Other choices range from the exotic, like the eggplant banh mi, to the everyday grilled cheese with sourdough and cheddar. Along with other lunch offerings, they have earned Star Provisions a spot on the list of 10 Best Places for Lunch in Atlanta.

The bread is freshly baked, organic, and an important element of the taste of the sandwiches. Breads available for sale include rye, pain de mie, fine-grained dinner rolls, and sultana fennel. Other baked goods include meringue cookies in lemon and chocolate, 'smores, and brown sugar shortbreads. The meats section features house-cured charcuterie and aged meats as well as freshly prepared terrines and sausage pate. The cheese section has artisanal American and European Cheeses, and boasts the largest selection of southern cheeses in the country.

"In our new location we offer a clean bright and comfortable space to enjoy coffee, friends and a bite to eat in a casual setting," Quatrano said. "We open at 8:00 and serve farm fresh eggs and omelets, then pizzas, sandwiches, salads, charcuterie boards and cheese boards."

For new customers, Quatrano recommends a mix of breads and dips.

"We have a terrific hummus plate for lunch that I am addicted to right now, and all of our breads and pastries are made with a lovely organic flour that Is Milled In The South," Quatrano said. "Our multigrain bread is my favorite with the sourness from our starter as well as dark and crusty exterior."
