Spoon Shine Cafe Has Frozen Yogurt And Healthy Meals

By S. Mathur

The yogurt is frozen but the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. In fact, the Spoon Shine Cafe is a one stop shop for a delicious and healthy lunch or snack. The cafe was opened in 2013 and current owner April Billings bought it in 2016.

"It has always been my dream to own and manage a sandwich or ice cream shop," she said.

Dahlonega is a small mountain town with a history, as the site of the 1838 Georgia gold rush. As the county headquarters, it is enjoying a tourism revival due to its location in the heart of the North Georgia wine country. For tourists, residents and students from the nearby university, it's a friendly stop for a tasty and healthy lunch.

Billings said that the atmosphere the cafe offers is friendly, homely, like Mayberry from the Andy Griffith show. There's outdoor seating for when the weather is fine. Indoors the homely atmosphere is also conducive to study and on any given day, there is a sprinkling of students with their laptops and textbooks.

The stars of course are the frozen yogurt varieties, including flavors like Tahitian Vanilla, Dreamy Dark Chocolate, Strawberry, Salt Caramel, Orange/Watermelon Sorbet, Cake Batter, California Tart, White Chocolate Mousse. Fresh fruit and other toppings make this a delicious and healthy treat. There's a choice of over twenty frozen yogurt toppings, which keeps people coming back to try new ones.

There are also more substantial food choices for lunch or a study break, with hamburgers, wings, salads and sandwiches. Billings says that her favorite menu item is the Philly Cheesesteak. There are vegan and organic options as well. All items use high quality meats and cheeses

"It's massive and I come from a family who loves to eat," she said of the cheesesteak.

The baked potato bar is another favorite, and the preparation of the baked potatoes is practically poetry. The mashed potatoes are topped butter and real Mozzarella cheese, and then there are the add-ons like black olives ,mushrooms, onion, and green peppers. Last of all is the sour cream with chopped chives. Another speciality is the baked chicken wings, which come with a special house sauce.

Fresh fruit smoothies round out a healthy meal. They're also great pick me ups for students studying for exams or writing papers at the last minute. Gyros, Turkish coffee and loose leaf brewed Ceylon tea are welcome finds in the area.
