Over Here Photography: From Over There to Over Here with Camera in Hand

By Elisha Neubauer

Joseph Gibson, owner of Over Here Photography, grew up around the art world. His mother, a teacher, and his father, an art professor, always encouraged his hobbies, leading him to the place he finds himself now.

At an early age, Gibson learned drawing, painting, and photography from his father's position as an art professor at the local university. His favorite memories are the long walks he would take with his father through the English countryside, in which he was allowed to use the professional camera equipment. During these walks, his father would teach him what he needed to know about lighting and composition and his love for photography was born.

While Gibson maintained his love of photography, he continued to supply an income through other means. These means drew him to the US in his early adulthood where he met his wife. When she was offered a job in Atlanta, the family moved and Gibson made his decision to follow his heart when it came to his career.

"I felt really inspired by the way Atlanta has so much nature in urban settings," Gibson said. "I love the mixture of buildings you can find: skyscrapers, arches, historic brick homes, even trains turned sushi joints!"

Feeling creative in his new setting and facing a new chapter in his life, Gibson launched Over Here Photography.

"Photography is something I've carried with me through travels, living in different countries, my own wedding and the birth of my two daughters as a familiar tool and friend," Gibson said. "As a hobby, I've been documenting my life and discovering my style for 15 or more years and as a career, I've been capturing other people's moments professionally for the past 4 years."

One of the largest features Gibson attributes to his success in this field isn't actually related to his talents as a photographer. Rather, Gibson believes it is his previous background in business that has kept his path clear.

"Those of us who create art for a living can sometimes have a hard time taking a step away from the artwork and doing the business side of things," he stated. "I business for two years in England and I like to think that gives me a level of accountability, communication skills and customer service that you would get in the most professional of circumstances."

Gibson strives to capture moments of honest joy, love, and laughter. He takes the time to get to know his subjects, hearing their stories, laughing with them, finding out what makes them tick. It is this inner knowledge that allows him to capture the true likeness of the person. Clients feel comfortable around Gibson and this permits him to see their genuine expressions and personalities, which come through in his shots. Whether shooting a wedding, a family reunion, or simply taking some updated photos of kids, Gibson puts his all into capturing an authentic image of the people in front of his camera.
