Nurture, Express, Release at Intown Tumbling and Yoga for Kids

By Elisha Neubauer

It's common knowledge that children need to exercise. They need to run, jump, and tumble. They're little bundles of energy just waiting to break free, to release said energy. And as parents, we want to provide them a safe place and nurturing environment to do so. Intown Tumbling and Yoga for Kids in Atlanta, Georgia strives to provide such an atmosphere for you and your little one.

Intown Tumbling and Yoga for Kids was started by Kim Steen, a former competitive gymnast and instructor. Steen cited her love of working with children as one of the factors that inspired her to launch Intown in Atlanta. The other? Her passion to spread the love of gymnastics through teaching. "Combining these two things was natural for me when I was looking for a new adventure in life," Steen stated. "I noticed there was no Intown gymnastics facility in Atlanta, so I began Intown Tumbling in 2010 by offering fun and convenient gymnastics classes on Saturday mornings."

Steen kicked off her first year as Intown Tumbling and Yoga for Kids in a rented room in the back of a community church. She began with three classes and only eighteen students. In the six years since inception, Intown Tumbling has grown into its own, operating in its very own 2800 square foot facility and offering thirty recreational gymnastics classes a week, with additional kids' yoga classes as well.

As a parent, I was surprised to see a facility that offered both yoga and gymnastics, as they appear to be drastically different upon first glance. After talking to Steen, however, the opposite rings true. "With both tumbling and yoga you develop strength, coordination, flexibility, confidence, focus, and self-esteem," she tells me. "Yoga allows children to learn to be comfortable with themselves, their emotions, and others. They learn that through techniques that we teach them in a fun and positive way. We do that through breathing techniques, asanas (poses), incorporating stories, art, music, and yoga games."

So what exactly can you expect from Intown Tumbling and Yoga for Kids?

"We offer gymnastics classes for ages two and up and offer kids' yoga classes for six months-teens," Steen states. Options for these classes include mommy and me classes in gymnastics and yoga, as well as a family option for yoga. "We also host birthday parties, camps during summer and school breaks, kids' yoga workshops, parents' night out, and various special events." The facility also currently hosts the Atlanta AcroYoga Community which allows adults to have several options well.

Six years ago, there was nothing like Intown Tumbling and Yoga for Kids in Atlanta. Today, kids have the opportunity to learn and grow within a state of the art facility; expanding their knowledge of both yoga and gymnastics, while expressing themselves and releasing their bottled up energy safely. "Atlanta is very supportive of community/local businesses," says Steen regarding the community Intown calls home. "It is also very family friendly and we feel supported here."
