Katey Penton Photography Captures Special Moments For Families

By S. Mathur

Katey Penton, owner of the eponymous studio in Conyers GA, came to love photography by way of art.

"I have always loved art," she said. "When I was little I dreamed of being an artist when I grew up and I loved to paint and draw. When I got into college I took some photo classes and I fell in love with being in the dark room and this whole new form of creating art!"

She opened her own business in 2011, and started out offering free photo sessions for newborns. Each free session led to a new booking and her career took off. Her two favorite genres are newborns and weddings. She loves babies and until she started her own family, had to make do with photographing other people's.

"They are only that tiny for a few short weeks, so it's an honor to be able to capture those moments that a mom will be able to cherish forever," she said. "I am a very patient person (I credit that to growing up as one of 9 kids) and you have to be super patient when photographing newborns. They pretty much run the show!"

Penton believes that she gets her sense of legacy from growing up in a large family. Photos tell you who you are, she feels, and that's the gift she gives to her subjects.

"Being able to capture moments for other families, no matter what the milestone or phase of life is, is an honor and privilege," she said. "Photos are proof of your legacy, where you came from, what shaped you. As a mom to three little ones myself, I make it a point to photograph my own children so that one day they can look back at the photos and remember where they came from, how they used to interact with and love one another."

Penton second love is wedding photography, and her family experience is handy here as well. The ceremonies are captured through narrative photography, recording the day as it unfolds. Her wedding portfolio reveals Penton's gift for capturing details, expressions and moments.

Penton loves to travel, and is willing to take her camera anywhere for a shoot. For locations that are more than 40 miles from her studio, clients must pay travel and lodging costs as well. Katey Penton Photography also has a strong social conscience that believes in giving back to the community. Penton uses her successful career to support such causes as Honduras Outreach, child victims of domestic human trafficking and shelters for homeless families.
