Johns Creek Yoga Takes You To The Next Level

By S. Mathur

Sheila McVay, Owner of Johns Creek Yoga studio, used to be an English professor before fully diving into teaching yoga.

"The longer I continued coming to the mat, the more it began to call to me," she said. "As my passion developed, I found myself driving from my home in Johns Creek to Sandy Springs several times a week for classes and longing for a community of like-minded people near me. Finally, I opened Johns Creek Yoga in February of 2012 with a true 'build it and they will come' prayer."

The prayers were answered, and the studio continues to grow. Even though McVay didn't know any teachers in the area, and only a few students, there was soon need for an expansion, which happened in January 2014. A second location, Duluth Yoga, will be opening in February 2018.

Part of the reason for its success might be that the studio doesn't follow trends and fads.

"Johns Creek Yoga specializes in what I would call authentic, soulful yoga," McVay said. "We don't really fall into any of the fancy yoga trends or brands, but we serve all levels of students, offering challenges for those who want to explore an edge and deep release for those who need to let go. We make each class an experience of body, mind, and soul by creating a beautiful environment, exploring various themes, layering in music and carefully sequencing postures."

At the studio, yoga is more than a workout. Besides building strength and flexibility, it takes the work to the next level.

"We prioritize the mind and the spirit as much as we do the body, and when all three of these meet in an atmosphere that is supportive and nurturing, students begin to enjoy the effects of yoga in everyday life," she said. "They begin to experience more happiness, more peace, more connection, and more overall satisfaction in their lives. We have the tools through teacher training programs, workshops, retreats, healing arts, and community connection to provide a deeper experience of all that yoga has to offer."

Another unique feature of the studio is the retreats offered throughout the year. This gives students a chance to explore new terrain and their own nature. The retreats take students to destinations abroad a couple of times in the year. There are also weekend retreats.
