The ProMover of Georgia: An Interview with Xtreme Moving

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We are a locally owned and operated moving and storage company that operates regionally in the southeast. We offered vaulted/crated storage in a secure environment. We offer local, intrastate and out of state moving for both residential and commercial clients. We also offer full packing, crating services, and move-in, move-out and regular cleaning services. Our home office is in Hoschton, GA and we also have an office in Spartanburg county, SC that services upstate SC and western NC.

Are there any specific responsibilities you ask of your clients prior to the move-in and on the actual move date?

Moving is a great time to go through your belongings and get rid of items that are no longer being used or wanted ? this should be done long before a pack crew or move crew comes in to start the move process. We offer complete packing services, however, if a customer chooses to do their own packing their move will go much smoother and more efficiently if they have this completed prior to their move date. The other advice I'd give is to start planning early ? don't wait until a few days ahead to hire a moving company.

What is your specific position at Xtreme Moving?

I'm the General Manager for Georgia and South Carolina Operations as well as Interstate Operations.

Do you believe that moving services are truly necessary for the average homeowner?

Yes, I do. Moving is among the top 3 most stressful events in a person's life. Most people work a lifetime for their worldly possessions and for their new home. Using a professional moving company that understands the needs of their clients and how to effectively deliver can relieve much of that stress!

What are some things you do to make sure the customer's move runs as smoothly as possible?

Communication is a big key ? that process starts when a customer first calls our office to inquire about our services. Our Move Coordinators do a great job in finding out what is most important to a potential customer ? is it one prized possession they want handled with extra TLC or a need to be delivered by a particular date for examples. We go out to many potential customer's homes to do a walk through before they ever book with us ? this allows us to see what we'd be moving and helps us to understand the needs of the customer, what the move will entail and allows us to be much more accurate when quoting for their move.

What sets your business apart from other comparable companies? Is there anything you believe you do better/different?

First off ? we're proud that we've earned the designation by the American Moving & Storage Association as a ProMover. Another thing that sets up apart is we use only our own employees. It's not uncommon in the moving industry for helpers or movers to be day laborers or temp workers picked up each morning to work for that day. We've made the decision not to run our business in this manner. All workers on our trucks, on our pack crews, etc are all employees ? that means this is what they do every day. They are trained and background screened. This is another key to making moves go smoother!

For those moving out of state, one important distinction is we offer only direct service. This means that one client's belongings only are on our truck at any given time. This allows us to give them both a pick up date and an exact delivery date instead of a date range like other larger moving companies frequently do. -How early should a homeowner contacting a moving services company before the day of their move? Well the short answer is as soon as possible. Depending on time of year (summer is always busiest for movers), what services they'll be wanting (full packing, do they need temp storage, etc), if a move is local or long distance all goes into how far out they should start planning. My suggestion is at least 30 days out they should be making contact and at least start the process. One advantage to us is once we give you a rate for either a local or an out of state move, we don't change he pricing or re-quote it after 30 days. We honor the pricing we've quoted so there is no loss to getting a move lined up early!

What specific qualities should a customer look for in a qualified and reliable moving company?

They should make sure they are licensed in their state for local or intrastate moving ? in Georgia, that is the Georgia Dept. of Public Safety. For an interstate move, that is Federal Motor Carrier's Safety Administration and the Department of Transportation. You should also make sure the mover is a member of their state's mover's association (Georgia Mover's Association) and AMSA (American Moving and Storage Association). We are members of both. In fact, I'm on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Mover's Association and we are designated a ProMover by AMSA as I mentioned earlier.

What are some common mistakes that homeowners make when preparing for their move?

Several things come to mind ? waiting until the last minute to choose a mover and book their move. Waiting until the last minute to start packing and realizing it can't be done in a day like they thought. Waiting to sort through and make a run to the local charity until the last minute. You see a theme here ? the most important thing is to plan and get organized. This is something a professional mover can help with just be calling and talking with them ? we can offer some perspective and tips on how to get organized for your upcoming move.

What is the best way for people to get in contact with you?
