Hot Interior Design Trends: An Interview with Janice Dietz of The Consulting House Inc.

By Janice Dietz

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Founded in 2001, a full service interior design and project management firm specializing in construction, renovations and interior decorating. Services include all architectural and design elements related to both the interior and exterior of a home.

What's one of your favorite design trends now?

I would have to say bringing the outside in and the inside out in terms of space, materials and objects.

Can you give some examples of how people are using color in their homes?

Specific to the architectural style of the house, specific spaces and overall mood of the space one is trying to achieve. Color is being used to make a statement as well as simply be an accent.

Is there a classic design look or style that's still popular?

Classic colonial, modern (mid century and classic modern), craftsman, transitional (combination of modern and traditional), farmhouse.

What do you think is one of the interior design trends that's not hot anymore?

I would have to say...desks in kitchens, vanity seats in master baths, beige as a color trend- gray is in.

What is a newer design trend that people are really starting to use?

Vintage pieces mixed with clean and modern items- a rustic modern, use of industrial materials to make unique objects and furnishings. Also, inclusion of bling to bring more glamour and drama to a space.
