Horizon Christian Academy Provides an All-Encompassing Education for Your Child

By S. Mathur

Horizon Christian Academy (HCA) is a non-denominational Christian school, with around 200 students. Marketing Coordinator Steve Harmon feels that it is unique among private schools because "We are a non-denominational school, not associated with any one church. This gives us the freedom to teach from the center of Christianity's core beliefs. Our school's weekly chapel services give our students the opportunity to worship and learn how to make their faith an active part of their everyday lives."

Parents like the family atmosphere that comes with small class sizes, and the extra care teachers and administrators can give to individual students. HCA began as a high school before developing into a fully accredited K-12 institution. As a result, it has always had an emphasis on college prep. Harmon says that "Offering an important partnership with Truett-McConnell College HCA's juniors and seniors not only learn how to succeed in college level course work but some of our recent graduates have entered college as sophomores instead of freshmen."

Families also value that the school provides a "positive Christian education that is built around a worldview, not of isolationism, but of engagement." Christian values are integrated into the teaching through daily Bible classes that teach apologetics, comparative world views, leadership, systematic theology, missions, church history, and how to read Scripture. Each Bible class also teaches a section of Scripture to allow students to understand the Bible on their own. Community service through Bible classes helps students to learn "what it means to serve others and give without expecting something in return," Harmon adds.

The new 33-acre campus is located in the heart of Forsyth County, near Cumming square and Forsyth Central High School. The location near the intersection of GA 400 and Hwy 20 makes it accessible to students from all of Forsyth & Dawson Counties, Canton, John's Creek, and Gainesville. The admissions process is thorough, making certain that the family and student are a good fit for HCA and to determine whether HCA can fully meet the needs of each student. For this year, many grades are nearly full, making the admissions process competitive.

The development of new athletic fields represents the growth that athletics at HCA are experiencing. Sports include football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, cross country and cheerleading. Extracurricular activities such as art, choir, drama, karate, National Honor Society, Praise Band, Prayer Groups/Bible Study, Service Club/Beta, Student Council, and Youth Leadership provide a rounded educational experience.

Harmon feels that the school prepares students for life: "The word I would use to describe Horizon's graduates is prepared. HCA's mascot is the Warrior. As a school we are preparing Warriors for Christ by partnering with families to provide a Christ-centered educational environment." Students are ready for college, but equally important, they graduate as capable and confident adults ready for life.
