From CPAs to Cupcakes: Smallcakes in Marietta, GA

By Elisha Neubauer

As a successful CFO of one of the largest CPA firms in the Southeast, Lori Pitts already had a mind for business. She wanted something else- something more. With childhood memories of baking alongside her mother and grandmother, Pitts began to look into opening her own cupcakery. After much research, Pitts stumbled upon the Smallcakes franchise.

Smallcakes franchises bake 15 signature flavors prior to opening daily. They have been featured on several seasons of Cupcake Wars and The View, gaining them widespread attention. With 13 locations in 8 different states, Smallcakes looked like the perfect business opportunity for Pitts' new venture.

"I was blessed to open the first Smallcakes in Marietta, Georgia," Pitts tells us. "I have since opened 3 additional locations: Smyrna, Augusta, and Newnan. I also have the food truck." She attributes her success to two particular reasons. "I believe we have the best product and work hard at making sure our customers have an outstanding experience when they come in the store," she says. "I believe a consistent product and good customer experience is what makes us so successful."

Smallcakes bakes their products fresh every single morning, so you're never buying day old cupcakes. Leftovers are donated to charities, churches, schools, et cetera. Donations such as these have helped members throughout the community by providing treats for teacher appreciation weeks, church community suppers, and helps feed homeless shelters. "It's great to know that people who otherwise wouldn't have been able to try one of our gourmet cupcakes still get to enjoy them!" Pitts exclaims.

One of the largest pulls to Smallcakes is the warm, inviting environment provided at each location. Branded coffee, cupcakes, milkshakes, hot chocolate, and more make for a comforting location to spend the afternoon, especially given the free WiFi and adequate seating for those who want to get a little work or study in while enjoying a treat. They also provide a neat little children's room for unique and adorable cupcake birthday parties!

Although the cupcakery offers over 20 unique cupcake flavors daily, Pitts tells us that they are currently tweaking their cookie recipes. "Based on feedback from our customers, we would like to offer a wider selection of cookies," Pitts states. "We currently have chocolate chip and red velvet cookies. We have been testing out offering the cookie cakes which has gotten good reviews."

"We also have a cupcake called chocolate cream that has buttercream in the middle that we usually can't keep in the case. My favorite is our coconut. It tastes just like the coconut cake my grandma used to make." One of the most unique items carried by Smallcakes is their small sized cakes in the gourmet cupcake flavors. "Why have a grocery store cake when you can go to Smallcakes?"
