A CrossFit Family at Atlanta's BTB Fitness

By S. Mathur

Nick and Lindsay Gecsy, owners of BTB Fitness, believe that the most useful aspect of the CrossFit system is that it does more than just address physical fitness. "It transforms people physically, emotionally, and personally," says Lindsay Gecsy. "Not only does it pertain to health and fitness but it is a community, a support system, and a family."

BTB was founded in 2007, and at that time, it was only the second CrossFit affiliate in Atlanta and the 118th in the world. Nick Gecsy discovered CrossFit during his time in the army: "Many of the military workouts pertained to the CrossFit model and Nick was hooked," explains his wife. "After 2 year-long tours in Iraq and 6 years active duty we married and moved to Atlanta. In 2011, we found and fell in love with BTB Fitness, the members, the trainers, and the community. We changed the way we looked at health and fitness and have never looked back."

BTB members range in age from early 20s all the way up to 72 years old, and Gecsy says that everyone can do their workouts safely, with great results. For beginners, BTB offers a free introductory class with a tour of the gym, a meeting with one of the coaches, explanations of CrossFit, and a short workout suitable for all fitness levels. They can also find answers to their questions and concerns about CrossFit. Visitors soon discover, Gecsy explains, that there is "much more to CrossFit than flipping tires and lifting heavy weights." Working out at a gym can easily feel solitary and disappointing- so BTB's strong sense of community and support from their skilled and certified coaches is a strong draw for both beginners and advanced clients.

CrossFit incorporates weight lifting, gymnastics, and endurance in programs that can be scaled in terms of age, experience and fitness level. The program designs are broad and inclusive but can be varied to meet the needs of just about anyone and their fitness levels, from military and firefighters, to office workers, stay-at-home moms/dads and grandparents. Workouts can be scaled for athletes training for specialized sports and events, or for those just looking to improve their overall health and fitness.

Lindsay Gecsy grew up in Atlanta and believes that this city is a good place to live for active people: "Nick was raised in Ohio and I attended school locally. Soon after we met, we decided we would make Atlanta our home. We have tremendous support and energy from local Atlanta businesses. Everyone loves partnering together to make this city the place to work and reside. Atlanta is rich in culture and southern hospitality."

The studio connects actively with the local community through special events with schools, the affiliate league, health and fitness seminars and fundraisers.

BTB Fitness can be found in Poncey Highlands at 696A Cleburne Terrace, NE and Buckhead at 3209R Maple Drive NE in Atlanta. You can visit their website at
