101 Steak Serves Classic Food With Culinary Creativity

By S. Mathur

What does a modern steakhouse look like? Visitors to 101 Steak will find a 60's vibe with a New York steakhouse feel, according to Beverage Director Chris Reid. The setting is suitable for anything from a romantic date to a special celebration to a business event.

"Strong but very comfortable atmosphere with lots of wood and leather accents. Although most steaks houses lean towards a masculine feel, we wanted to be inclusive with very positive feedback from women as well," Reid said.

101 Steak is the latest venture from the 101 Concepts team, along with other restaurants like Food 101, Meehan's Public House, Cibo e Beve, Smoke Ring, Restaurant Paradis in the Atlanta, GA area. The chef-driven menu features high-quality steaks and seafood, a raw bar and more than 100 wines.

"Although we are a steakhouse and will of course offer those familiar meat options, guests will also see a more chef-driven selection of appetizers and signature entrées that exhibit culinary creativity," Chef and partner Joe Ahn said.

Executive Chef Ahn learnt Korean, Chinese and Japanese cooking in his family's restaurant in Pennsylvania. He combines this with training from the Culinary Institute of America and experience in Italian, traditional American and southern cooking. His signature item is the 32-ounce tomahawk chop. The seasonal menu incorporates the classics and also global influences and creative side dishes. As well as dry aged and Black Angus beef, Chef Ahn offers dishes like seafood misto, scallop crudo topped with "scallop bacon" and homemade burrata and sides like jalapeño corn brûlée with smoked bacon.

The soups, appetizers and side dishes get a lot of attention. What is his favorite dish on the menu?

"Loaded question, all of our kids are pretty!" Reid said. "Have to say sides are the biggest surprise to many. Lots of thought and passion go into those dishes. With our Brussels and corn brulee taking the lead. But, can not leave out or in house homemade cheesecake."

Locally sourced ingredients are part of the secret behind the outstanding food.

"Sourcing is everything," Reid said. "We constantly seek out and reevaluate offerings from prestigious suppliers in order to remain consistent in the guest experience. Which is largely the biggest challenge of any restaurant. After that, a little salt and pepper and into the 1600 degree broiler."

The wine list is impressive and 101 Steak also offers whiskey tastings Monday to Thursday nights. Various spaces like the Private Dining Room, the Wine Room, the Main Dining Room and the Bar can be reserved for private events.
